About
The Independent Aunties are a theatre company based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We strive to create theatre that is playful, witty, physically stylish and wildly maginative. Much of our work delves into women’s societal roles, constraints and obsessions, both historically and contemporarily. We are wordsmiths, with a penchant for satire and outrageous humour. We have written plays entirely in rhyme, turned metaphors into a literal reality on stage and are always looking at the underbelly, the flip-side and the large possibilities inherent in the suspension of disbelief in the theatre.
The company was founded in 2003, with the creation of what was to become our award-winning show, Clean Irene & Dirty Maxine. Over the next five years, Clean Irene & Dirty Maxine toured extensively in Canada and the U.S, and we created four other critically acclaimed plays: Frances, Mathilda and Tea (Produced by Theatre Passe Muraille 2005), The Mysterious Shorts (Commissioned and produced by Theatre Passe Muraille 2005 and Robbers Daughters (Commissioned and produced by the Cooking Fire Festival 2007), and Breakfast (developed through the Theatre Centre residency programme, and produced by The Theatre Centre 2008).
The founding Aunties are Evalyn Parry, Anna Chatterton and Karin Randoja. We have an ever-widening circle of directing and design collaborators, who include: director Brendan Healy (Breakfast), designer Julie Fox (Breakfast), designer Sherri Hay (Clean Irene & Dirty Maxine), lighting and set designer Trevor Schwellnus (Clean Irene, Mysterious Shorts, Frances, Mathilda and Tea,) sound designers Richard Windeyre (Breakfast), costume designer Erika Connor (The Mysterious Shorts) sound designer Nick Murray (Mysterious Shorts), lighting designer Laird MacDonald (Breakfast).
